Web design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of websites. The different areas of web design include web graphic design; interface design; authoring, including standardised code and proprietary software; user experience design; and search engine optimization.
A brief history...
The web was actually devised in the early 1950’s as a way for American scientists to transmit information to each other over vast distances. The internet concept was developed in 1969, and if this project would have fail, we’ll probably won’t have the internet as we know it now. n 1989, whilst working at CERN Tim Berners-Lee proposed to create a global hypertext project, which later became known as the World Wide Web. During 1991 to 1993 the World Wide Web was born. Text-only pages could be viewed using a simple line-mode browser.
W3C was created in October 1994. This discouraged any one company from monopolizing a propriety browser and programming language, which could have altered the effect of the World Wide Web as a whole. The W3C continues to set standards, which can today be seen with JavaScript. In 1994 Andreessen formed Communications Corp. that later became known as Netscape Communications, the Netscape 0.9 browser. Netscape created its own HTML tags without regard to the traditional standards process.
The real vision and execution for the World Wide Web didn't come about until around 40 years later in 1980 when an English chap by the name of Tim Berners Lee was working on a project known as 'Enquire'. Enquire was a simple database of people and software who were working at the same place as Berners Lee. It was during this project that he experimented with hypertext. Hypertext is text that can be displayed on devices which utilize hyperlinks. The Berners Lee Enquire system used hyperlinks on each page of the database, each page referencing other relevant pages within the system.
When the web first started, web pages were simply text documents. Now web pages are much more than documents; they now have the ability to be full blown applications. Part of this ability is due to the additions of JavaScript and CSS. It was on August 19th 1995 that JavaScript was first announced, originally code named 'Mocha'. This addition to the World Wide Web was not fully supported by some people, including Robert Cailliau who had worked with Berners Lee on the WWW project.
As more and more users were online, it became clear that navigation needed to be easier, so web designers added menus that allowed users to go directly to another part of the web. With all of these new capabilities HTML was updated which allowed for more control over images, tables, and other elements that designers could use to make their pages more appealing.
The future...
UX Design is the future - User experience design (UXD, UED or XD) is the process of enhancing user satisfaction by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the user and the product.[1] User experience design encompasses traditional human–computer interaction (HCI) design, and extends it by addressing all aspects of a product or service as perceived by users.
User experience design includes elements of interaction design, information architecture, user research, and other disciplines, and is concerned with all facets of the overall experience delivered to users. Following is a short analysis of its constituent parts.
The role of interaction designer has shifted from being just focused on specifying UI components and communicating them to the engineers to a situation now where designers have more freedom to design contextual interfaces which are based on helping meet the user needs.[8] Therefore, User Experience Design evolved into a multidisciplinary design branch that involves multiple technical aspects from motion graphics design and animation to programming.
UX Design refers to the term User Experience Design, while UI Design stands for User Interface Design. These elements are crucial to a product and work closely together. Despite their professional relationship, the roles themselves are quite different, referring to very different parts of the process and the design discipline. UX Design is a more analytical and technical field, UI Design is closer to what we refer to as graphic design.

User Experience Design is the process of development and improvement of quality interaction between a user and a company.
User Experience Design is responsible with the process of research, testing, development, content, and prototyping to test for quality results.
User Experience Design is in theory a non-digital (cognitive science) practice, but used and defined predominantly by digital industries.
